The Game & FAQ's
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:
When and where will the practices and games be held?
Practices will start in March (see Schedules), and will be held at Battersby Field, accross from Whatcom Middle School. There will be two practices each week for the boy’s and girl’s teams, with inter-squad scrimmages or games on Saturdays.
What equipment is required?
In addition to a stick, the boys are required to have a helmet, shoulder and arm pads, gloves, a mouthguard, and athletic supporter/protective cup (see Equipment). Cleats are optional but they may not be baseball shoes or shoes with metal cleats. Players may not use hockey equipment, including helmet.
Girls are required to have a stick, mouthguard, and an eye guard - close-fitting gloves are optional. In addition, the goalkeeper is required to wear a throat protector and chest protector.
Each player is responsible for his/her own equipment with the exception of the goalkeeper's equipment, which will be provided by the team.
Where do I purchase equipment? There are a few places around town to purchase new equipment. Big 5 and Prostock Athletics carry some equipment. There are many good online retailer's for lacrosse gear. You can also look on E-Bay or Craig’s List for used equipment.
Isn't lacrosse a violent game? On the contrary, statistics have shown that lacrosse practices normally have an injury rate below that of gymnastics, football, basketball, soccer, and field hockey! The normal game injury rate for boy's is lower than football, wrestling, soccer, ice hockey, and gymnastics. For girl's the game injury rate is lower than gymnastics, soccer, basketball and field hockey. This is primarily because of the strict adherence to rules associated with body/stick contact and for the boys, the equipment.
